Located in the green heart of Abruzzi, Valle Reale, marks the geographical border among the Gran Sasso National Park, the Laga Mountains and the Majella National Park. Valle Reale vineyards are on very thin soils, very rich in skeleton with a light base of clay and a slight sandy component. The proximity to the Gran Sasso and Majella massif and the altitude of the estate guarantee wide temperature ranges between day and night and summer and winter (that here is very harsh). The perfect grade of maturity is reached here only at the beginning of November when the first snow whitens the Morrone Mount. The peculiarities of this area meet again on the wines. They are characterized from a full maturity of all components, combined to a fresh elegance of perfumes with articulate aromatic complexity. This vineyard, located around the vinification cellar, has an extension of thirty hectares and is surrounded by the mountains that, lined up like an amphitheatre around our vineyards, almost look as if they wanted to cradle them. We are at 350 m. above sea level, at the beginning of the Peligna Valley, which is indicated as the place of origin of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. It is exactly from this area, rich in history, that the Valle Reale project begins. And it is in Popoli that the 8 hectares of our old vineyard (38 years is the average age of the plants) are to be found, trained to Abruzzi tendone system. After a careful selection of the plants, the Montepulciano buds taken from this vineyard have been successively grafted and used for the new plants, which represent the remaining part of the vineyard in Popoli. The training system adopted for the new vineyards is the trellis training system, characterized by a high density of planting (6,700plants/Ha); this allows a close control and reduction of the yield per plant which, as modern viticulture shows, is strictly related to the quality of grapes and wine. Furthermore, this training system allows the mechanisation of several operations, which guarantees the correct timing of intervention during the growing season and helps reducing the operational costs. In 2003 Valle Reale planted 23 hectares of vineyards close to the town of Capestrano, in the L’Aquila district, right below the old Castle of Capestrano. Besides the mass selection of Montepulciano plants taken from our old vineyard in Popoli, we selected and propagated new populations of Trebbiano grapes in Capestrano, planting 6 Hectares of this cultivar, aiming to produce a well-structured yet fresh and pleasant white wine. The high presence of gravels makes the soil profile of Capestrano very similar to the one in Popoli, although the matrix here is clayish rather than loamy. This allows a higher water holding capacity and therefore a better water supply for the plants during the hot summer months. Also here, like in Popoli, we opted for a trellis training system with a high density of planting (6500 plants per hectare) and wooden posts, joining advanced technical viticulture and operating in respect towards the surrounding environment.
